FAMILY SPONSORSHIP

FAMILY SPONSORSHIP

If you are a permanent resident or citizen of Canada and have a family who aspires to immigrate to Canada, you may be able to assist them in obtaining permanent residency. Family reunion is still one of the pillars of Canada’s immigration system.

To become a sponsor, follow these steps:

  • You must be 18 or older to participate.
  • You and the sponsored relative must sign a sponsorship agreement, which requires you to provide financial assistance to your relative if needed.
  • It also states that the person who becomes a permanent resident will make every effort to assist him or her.
  • You must provide financial help to a spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner for three years from the date of your permanent residence.
  • You must provide financial help to your dependent child for a period of 10 years or up to 25 years, whichever comes first.

Who is Eligible for Family Class Sponsorship?

In Canada, sponsoring families is a way to bring families together. The Canadian government thinks that families should be kept together and prioritises sponsorship applications. There are a variety of options for family members who want to become permanent residents of Canada, whether they are Canadians or permanent residents, to sponsor a family member who is currently living abroad.

The Canadian family member may sponsor:

  • His or her spouse
  • Common-law partner
  • Conjugal partner
  • Dependent child
  • Adopted children
  • Parents
  • Grandparents
